Road
2021

In response to a group sound composition that my Photography and Moving Image class, in LSAD, TUS, Limerick, created collaboratively, I explored the connection between travel and departure, along with the negative emotions which can result from a loved one leaving through travel, such as emigration or relocation. In this video, I aimed to convey feelings of loss, anxiety, emptiness, loneliness and the feeling of being abandoned or left behind, which can be experienced by those who are unable to accompany family members, friends or even partners, on such journeys.

To achieve this, I experimented with visual rhythm, combining both literal and abstract elements, composition, shooting through materials such as colour filters, abstract shapes and lines, road markings, colour, visual focus, shadows, light, creating a sense of suspense and anticipation, rapidly intercutting and layering shots, along with creating a fragmented, non-linear narrative, to prompt viewers to question if this video presents a depiction of reality.

I attempted to challenge the conventions of moving image methods and practices, by implementing elements of an experimental approach to create this video. I explored this concept through a combination of both digital and analogue moving image processes, including the incorporation of a letter box camera obscura process that I developed.
